Sustainable employability in a post-pandemic world: resilience in the workplace
In the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the way we work has changed dramatically. The period forced organizations to quickly shift to new work models that they could have easily stayed away from before. Think home/remote working and online meetings. From the idea of always being in the office and physical meetings to the "new way of working" leads to new opportunities and challenges in the field of sustainable employability. How do organizations promote resilience and well-being in the workplace in a post-pandemic world?
Flexibility and adaptability
One of the most important lessons that Working Netherlands took away from the pandemic was the importance of flexibility and adaptability. Resilient organizations were often able to respond more quickly to change and proved better able to tackle challenges. Resilience and adaptability are also important for employees to keep up in a rapidly changing world. Continuous (personal) development and continuing education in a healthy organizational culture ensure that employees acquire new skills and know how to adapt to new ways of working.
Mental health
During the pandemic, the importance of mental health became more in the spotlight. Even in the post-pandemic world, there is a lot of focus on promoting mental health. Even though the workplace is not always where the cause of mental health problems can be found, it often provides easier access to support from the workplace. Consider bringing in a psychologist or actively contributing to a better work-life balance through flexible work arrangements.
Inclusiveness and diversity
The pandemic has also increased existing inequalities in the labor market. People have lost their jobs or face economic insecurity as a result of COVID-19. An inclusive and diverse work environment where employees feel valued and respected regardless of their background or identity can reduce these inequalities. Ensuring equal opportunities and actively combating discrimination and prejudice in the workplace are first steps in reducing labor market disparities.
Connectedness and cooperation
Finally, it is important for the resilience of a post-pandemic organization to have a culture of connectedness and collaboration. The abrupt transition to remote working has led to isolation, alienation from colleagues and a distance from the workplace for some employees. It is therefore important that organizations invest in building strong teams and fostering a sense of community even when working entirely in a virtual environment.
Future-oriented post-pandemic world
The world is constantly changing and no one knows with certainty what tomorrow will bring. That's why investing in sustainable employability is more important than ever. Improving mental health, increasing resilience, and betting on inclusion and connectedness positions employees and organizations for what is to come.
