AI in the workplace: opportunity or threat? | Different Thinking Podcast #29 with Daniel Stuart
AI is no longer future music, but daily reality, even in the workplace. In a new episode of the Anders Denken Podcast, presenter Cis Hageman talks about this with Daniël Stuart, project manager of AI at the police. He talks about how AI has already been applied there since 2017 and what it means for the way people do their work.
AI: key technology within digital transformation
"AI is a key technology within digital transformation," Stuart said. "It changes not only processes, but also how people do their jobs." At the police, this manifests itself, for example, in the smart choice tool: an AI system that helps citizens determine whether to report commercial fraud. Routine and mind-numbing work, such as manually recognizing blinded car windows, is also increasingly being taken over by technology. "Previously, people sat all day drawing rectangles on images. That work is now automated, allowing them to spend their time more usefully."
Why human interpretation remains indispensable
Yet the deployment of AI does not mean that humans become obsolete. On the contrary. "AI systems can observe well and sometimes even make connections, but they lack the capacity for real interpretation," Stuart explains. "This is precisely why human control remains essential." According to him, as an organization you have to ask yourself with every issue whether you really need AI, or whether you are "shooting a gun at a gnat."
What does AI mean for my organization?
The rise of AI not only changes processes but also demands something of employees and organizations. New technology offers room to organize tasks smarter, but also requires new skills, critical thinking skills and ethical considerations. For HR and managers, this means: investing in digital literacy, offering room for training and thinking along with them about what "good work" means. Because ultimately, with smart use of technology, every organization becomes stronger.
