The importance of informal learning in the workplace
Learning is not just done in school or during a course or training. Much of what a person learns is in an informal way. In the workplace, informal learning plays an important role. What exactly does informal learning involve, and why is it so valuable?
What is infomercial learning?
Informal learning is learning that takes place outside of a defined education or training program. It often happens spontaneously, such as during conversations with colleagues, by solving problems or experimenting with new working methods. This form of learning is less structured and often happens without a person's conscious involvement.
Examples of informal learning include:
- Watching along with an experienced colleague
- Getting feedback while working
- Looking up or trying something yourself
- Working together in a project team
4 reasons why informal learning is important
Informal learning is a powerful means of transferring and developing knowledge and skills.
- Directly applicable: Because informal learning often takes place in the real world, it connects directly to the needs of the work. employees learn something they need to do their jobs better.
- Efficient and flexible: Informal learning takes less time and resources than formal training. It often happens on the job so employees do not have to stop work to learn something new.
- Strengthens collaboration: Informal learning often occurs through interaction with colleagues. This not only strengthens knowledge exchange, but also solidarity and cooperation within the company.
- Encourages own initiative: Informal learning encourages employees to actively seek solutions and knowledge themselves. This increases their independence and commitment to their work.
Encouraging informal learning
Organizations can develop a culture that encourages informal learning. Some tips for this include:
- Encourage collaboration: provide an open work environment where employees can easily ask questions and share ideas.
- Give space on trying: Allow employees to try new things without fear of making mistakes.
- Recognize the value of learning: Regularly discuss what employees have learned and how it helps them in their work.
Deploy mentoring: pair less experienced employees with experienced mentors so they can share their knowledge and experience.
