Wealth through difference: cultural diversity as a force in the workplace
With over 170 nationalities in the workplace, cultural diversity in the cleaning industry is not a vision of the future, but daily reality. Yet for many managers, it proves to be a challenge: how do you deal with differences in values, customs and communication within the organization? "There is much need for knowledge, but few handles," says Yvonne van Zantvoort of Schoonmakend Nederland. "That's why we decided to organize cultural diversity workshops together with paraDIGMA groep . The need turned out to be much greater than expected."
Unknown makes unloved
Saaid Fenzar of paraDIGMA groep, who conducts workshops on cultural diversity at Schoonmakend Nederland, among others, recognizes that there is a great need for more knowledge on the subject. "Many organizations have the same challenge: unknown makes unloved. We live in a world where we increasingly encounter each other on the shop floor, but rarely really get to know each other. This creates misunderstandings that are easy to avoid if you know what's behind them."
The strength of his approach lies in the personal touch. "I share my own experiences as a newcomer to the Netherlands. That makes it relatable and opens the conversation. When you understand why, for example, someone brings their family to a work meeting or deals with illness in a different way, your view of cooperation changes."
Leading with an open mind
Executives in particular have a key role in this. "They want to, but often don't know how," says Saaid. "Our workshops offer insight and practical tools. For example, on how to discuss cultural differences without judgment." This ensures more mutual understanding and prevents noise on the line.
Yvonne adds: "We see that participants are really touched. They realize: you can't judge people based on what you see. You need more information to work well together."
Sustainable binding and engaging
In an increasingly tight labor market, cultural diversity is not a "nice to have," but a necessity. "Companies that get this right are more innovative, resilient and attractive as employers," Saaid argues. "Diversity is not a threshold, it is an opportunity. But you do need to invest in knowledge, policy and commitment."
