Gen Alpha: how do you prepare for the next generation of employees?
We are just getting used to Gen Z in the workplace, but the next generation is already upon us. We are talking about Generation Alpha, or Gen Alpha. Born between 2010 and 2025, this generation is growing up in a world that is changing at lightning speed. On the one hand, there is the digital footprint that Gen Alpha already has from birth, but also the change to an uncertain future due to climate change.
Even though this generation is not yet at work, there are already starting points that provide guidance for the future in the workplace.
Technology skills and expectations
Gen Alpha are "digital natives": they grew up with technology and this has become an extension of them. Technology will therefore become an important part of their work. Therefore, invest in a good digital infrastructure and keep developing in it. Flexibility, mobility and hybrid working are also becoming important components for Gen Alpha when choosing a suitable employer.
Teaching and learning style
Generation Alpha's learning environment has changed significantly from previous generations. Technology has made personalized learning, interactive apps and online platforms accessible. They are also accustomed to instant feedback and constant access to information. To respond to this component, companies can offer continuous learning opportunities and use gamification to keep learning interactive and fun.
Values and work culture
This newest generation is growing up in a world where diversity, inclusiveness and sustainability are paramount. Gen Alpha is therefore more likely to choose organizations that take social responsibility seriously and offer meaningful work. Many young people from this generation will also seek autonomy within their work. Companies can take advantage of this by creating a culture of entrepreneurship.
Soft skills and human interaction
Despite Gen Alpha growing up and a digital world, this does not mean they do not value human interaction. Social skills will be essential. However, they do need to find a balance between online and offline communication. As an organization, you can start supporting them by offering training programs in which they can improve their soft skills, as well as setting up a mentoring program.
Work-life balance and health
Generation Alpha, because their parents have come to value a good work-life balance, will expect the same when they go to work. Therefore, they will look for jobs that allow for a healthy balance and where their well-being is taken seriously. You can respond to this by providing flexible work arrangements for your employees and offering various health initiatives.
The future of work with Gen Alpha
A new generation always brings with it new dynamics, and we can only say for sure - when Gen Alpha starts working - what impact they will have on organizations. But organizations can anticipate and keep up with the times now. These initiatives can also positively impact current employees and act as a recruitment tool for new talent.
