Generation X x Generation Z: from 'don't dick around' to work with meaning

In the first episode of the OMG podcast generation expert Kim Jansen discusses the differences as well as similarities between generations. In the latest episode, two guests join her: Erwin (Generation X) and Sophie (Generation Z/Millennial). In an open and entertaining conversation they expose both frictions and mutual appreciation, concluding that generational differences offer opportunities to learn from each other.

Generation X: loyal, critical and straightforward

Erwin recognizes the description of a generation that grew up in an authoritarian system, with the motto: "Don't dick around, but clean up. Although he recognizes the power of generational diversity and says he learns more from young people than the other way around, he also has reservations. Young people, he says, are sometimes a bit complacent or too quick to sit back. He also thinks they make high demands in conversations about salary and career, although he understands that the tight labor market gives them room to do so. He finds it remarkable that older colleagues returned to the office sooner after the corona period, while young people found working at home just fine.

Generation Z: ambitious, self-aware and searching for meaning

Sophie recognizes that her generation is strongly focused on fun work, personal growth and social impact. The well-known Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) also plays a role: many young people set the bar high for themselves. She illustrates this with a recognizable anecdote: as a veterinary assistant, she is sometimes ignored at the front desk in favor of an older colleague, whom customers automatically attribute more knowledge. "Whereas we are actually more modernly trained and know the latest methods," Sophie explains. According to her, the "demandingness" of her generation stems primarily from the desire for meaningful work.

Opportunities through differences

The generation gap sometimes leads to misunderstandings. Young people experience frustration at the lack of room for innovation, while older people are more likely to be bothered by what they perceive as laziness or a low work ethic. Yet the core message of the episode is positive: it is precisely in these differences that the power of collaboration lies. Erwin praises young people's digital skills, while Kim emphasizes that experience can also sometimes hinder when people think they "know it all. The conversation makes it clear that the combination of experience and fresh eyes leads to growth for teams, organizations and individuals.
