All about intercultural communication | Different Thinking Podcast with mediator Ali Al Hadaui
In episode #30 of the Anders Denken Podcast, we dive into a topic that is more topical than ever: intercultural communication. Our guest is Ali Al Hadaui, mediator, trainer, confidential advisor and ombudsman. In the podcast, we discuss how culture is deeply intertwined with workplace behavior and why it pays to communicate more culturally sensitive.
From collision to understanding
Ali emphasizes that people often share the same values, but express them differently. And it is precisely in that expression that things can go wrong. "Behavior is what you see, but behind that is a world of norms and context," he explains. Conflicts often arise not because of content, but because of misunderstanding about behavior. The solution? Not judging immediately, but taking a step back and asking yourself: why is this affecting me?
Culture-sensitive communication begins with curiosity
In organizations where people from different backgrounds work together, it is important to be curious about each other's frames of reference. Ali cites the example of a merger between a Dutch and Belgian bank, in which the differences in manners led to considerable misunderstandings. "What works for one person can create distance for another. But by consciously dwelling on how the other person communicates, you can strengthen the relationship and improve cooperation."
Giving feedback without judgment
Giving feedback is also discussed in detail. According to Ali, it is an illusion that feedback is always objective. "Feedback is colored by your own values. But expressing that creates room for dialogue." His advice to employees: don't make your heart a murder pit. Don't wait too long to share your feelings, but do it respectfully and in connection.
