Migraines in the Workplace: From Misunderstanding to Prevention | Anders Denken Podcast #38 with Wardell Amerika

ADP Wardell Amerika

Migraine is much more than “just a headache.” It is a genetically determined brain disorder that has a massive impact on many people’s work, personal lives, and ability to cope. In episode #38 of the Anders Denken Podcast, host Cis Hageman talks with Wardell Amerika (neurologist, lifestyle physician, and director of Wardell’s Clinics) about what migraine is, why it is so often underestimated, and what organizations can do to prevent absenteeism.

Migraine: a debilitating condition that often goes unnoticed

Wardell explains that migraines go through different stages and can last for days, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Not every headache is a migraine, but that is precisely why an accurate diagnosis is so important. It is worth noting that migraines are very common (affecting about 1 in 7 people) and, according to research, are actually the most debilitating condition among women under 50.

Triggers and Lifestyle: Why a Holistic Approach Makes a Difference

Instead of treating migraines solely “symptomatically” with medication, Wardell views migraines primarily as a genetic susceptibility to stimuli. When the “migraine bucket” becomes too full due to triggers, an attack occurs. These triggers can be very diverse: sleep, stress, diet, routine, light, sound, smells, and even changes in the weather.
The common thread: for Wardell, lifestyle and vitality form the foundation. Not as a replacement for medication, but as a sustainable starting point: “Lifestyle if possible, medication if necessary.”

Understanding in the workplace is crucial

Many people with migraines feel they aren’t taken seriously: “I get headaches sometimes too” is a response Wardell hears regularly. That lack of understanding can actually lead to additional stress and pushing oneself too hard, which worsens the symptoms.
In addition, migraines also have a clear impact on business: according to Wardell, the costs associated with absenteeism can amount to thousands of euros per employee per year.

What can organizations do?

Wardell advocates for awareness, early detection, and prevention. Furthermore, many people with migraines are underdiagnosed: fewer than half have ever seen a doctor for migraines. Organizations can help by making the topic open for discussion and actively informing employees who suffer from (chronic) headaches about the support available, such as through the company physician.
