OMG Podcast #2 - Baby boomer x Generation Y: what they can learn from each other
In the second episode of OMG the podcast from paraDIGMA groep , generation expert and writer Kim Jansen talks with two guests who each represent their own zeitgeist: Co (baby boomer generation) and Jan-Willem (generation Y). Together they explore how differences in work attitudes, communication and expectations between generations manifest and, most importantly, what we can learn from each other.
From job for life to meaningful work
Co grew up at a time when work offered security and structure above all else. "You worked hard, often your whole life in the same profession," he says. "Your family revolved around your work." Even after retirement, he remained active - as a volunteer, supervisor of status holders and proud grandfather. Sitting still does not suit him.
Jan-Willem recognizes himself in that commitment, but grew up with a different mindset. For him, work is more about development, freedom and meaning. "We were taught to continue studying, make strides, but somewhere along the way you ask yourself: what am I actually doing it for?" he says.
Hierarchy, freedom and a fresh perspective
What used to be taken for granted - respect for authority and fixed structures - is no longer taken for granted by younger generations. Jan-Willem: "Why should I skip three layers when I can go directly to the director?"
Co recognizes this attitude, but stresses the importance of mutual understanding: "Authority is not a bad thing, as long as you deal with it in a human way."
Both agree: organizations benefit from a mix of experience and innovation. Experience provides stability; a fresh perspective brings change. That very combination makes teams stronger.
Generational differences? Or just human?
Many apparent generational differences can ultimately be traced back to humanity. Whether it's workload, balance, or meaning - each generation seeks in its own way to balance work, learning, and life.
