OMG Podcast #3 – Pragmatic x Gen Z: working based on values

Why does one colleague take on everything themselves, while another keeps asking questions? And why does one generation seem to embrace change effortlessly, while another prefers to understand why first? In episode 3 of the OMG podcast by paraDIGMA groep , generation expert Kim Jansen paraDIGMA groep into the theme of working from values.

Sitting at the table are pragmatists Ilona and Neill from Generation Z. Together, they explore how values, motivation, and expectations surrounding work differ and where they intersect.

“I want to understand why we do things”

For the younger generation, work is often more than just a job. It must be challenging, offer opportunities to learn, and align with personal values. "I want to make an impact, but I also need patience to build experience," says Gen Z'er Neill. Work is important, but it's not everything; it's part of a broader life.

Ilona recognizes that desire for meaning, but sees it differently based on her experience. "I've always enjoyed my work, but I keep asking myself: is this still right for me?" She sees that reflection—continuing to evaluate and adjust—as a strength, not a weakness.

Work is not who you are, but it is something that belongs to you.

A recurring theme in the episode is the role that work plays in a person's identity. While work is a way of life for some, others see it primarily as a means of developing themselves and creating space for other things that are important.

This difference can lead to misunderstandings, but it also offers opportunities. "It is precisely by discussing this that you avoid making assumptions about each other," emphasizes Kim Jansen.

Differences that connect

The episode is full of recognizable examples: from dealing with technology to humor in the workplace, from hierarchy to daring to express an opinion. Small moments that show how generational differences become apparent in everyday work. At the same time, it turns out that these differences often conceal the same needs: appreciation, trust, and space to be yourself. "Ultimately, everyone wants to be taken seriously," says Ilona.
