This is how you encourage employees to give feedback to each other
Giving and receiving feedback is an important part of a positive organizational culture and to achieve professional growth and development. It is often assumed that feedback is only given and received in the relationship between employer and employee or supervisor and team member. But it is actually beneficial to encourage colleagues to give feedback among themselves. In this article, we share some strategies you can implement to foster a culture of open communication and feedback within your organization.
4 strategies to encourage mutual feedback
Strategy 1. Create a safe (work) environment
One of the most important factors in encouraging feedback is creating a safe and open work environment. In a safe work environment, every employee can be themselves and everything can be discussed. When employees feel they can share their opinions without fear of negative consequences, they are more likely to share. Of course, it takes time to create a culture where every employee feels safe enough to give each other feedback, but certainly also to receive feedback. One step in this is to clearly communicate that feedback is not meant to criticize each other, but to improve and grow.
Strategy 2: Offer training courses.
For many new executives, the norm is to take various training courses to get along well with their team. Part of this often includes giving feedback. One option is to offer this training to employees as well. This way they can learn to give feedback in a constructive way and find out how to respond properly when they receive feedback. After all, everyone handles giving and receiving feedback differently so it is helpful if employees are aware of how it can be experienced for themselves, but also by others.
Strategy 3: Set a good example yourself
As an employer, supervisor or manager, it is important to set a good example yourself. Give regular feedback to team members, both positive and constructive, as well as to colleagues in similar positions. Show that you value feedback by acting on it and taking any areas for improvement seriously. By setting a good example yourself, you also show that giving and receiving feedback is a normal part of the job.
Strategy 4: Be patient and consistent
Creating a positive organizational culture takes time, so does developing a feedback culture. It is important to be patient and remain consistent in encouraging feedback. Remind employees regularly, especially in the beginning, of the importance of feedback and continue to actively provide feedback yourself. After some time, employees will get used to the idea, it will become part of the routine and they will give feedback more and more easily.
