"Don't reduce parenthood to a scheduling problem" - Carlijne Joosten on parenthood and work

When you think of working parenthood, you may think mostly of leave arrangements or part-time work. But according to Carlijne Joosten, founder of Hotel Souplesse, it's about much more. In episode #32 of the Different Thinking Podcast, she talks about how parenting is a fundamental transition that affects both the parent and the organization.

More than practical arrangements

"Many organizations still solve parenthood with an arrangement, congratulations and a work schedule," says Carlijne. "But underlying it is about identity, motivation and energy. That's where the impact is in the workplace."

Souplesse over balance

According to Carlijne, organizations need to let go of the idea of "balance. "Balance suggests that you can neatly balance work and parenthood. In practice, it's often chaotic. It's about learning to shift gears and staying flexible. That's what I call agility."

A call to employers

Carlijne advocates not reducing parenting to a scheduling issue, but seeing it as an opportunity to engage in talent development and leadership. "By having the conversation and not just following policy, organizations can retain and grow young parents."
