Anders Denken Podcast S2E04 with Rogier Mars

Neuroscientist Rogier Mars on that what we can learn from primates | Anders Denken Podcast #16

Where does our behavior come from? How are social groups structured? What is actually the ideal size of such a group? And why do we permanently fail when we try to be inclusive? In our latest Anders Denken Podcast, neuroscientist Rogier Mars provides answers.

"We people like to handle groups of up to 150 people. Think, for example, of the old church communities, the standard units in the army, but also, for example, the 'operational units' of successful companies. Does a group get bigger? Then we have to break it up into smaller subgroups. Otherwise the mutual contact and our cooperative component is lost."

According to Mars, inclusiveness within those groups is actually quite unnatural. "As primates, we had to be able to quickly assess situations and food. After all, that was necessary for survival. We apply that visual categorization and quick ranking of information to our social situations today as well. It causes us to seek out people who look like us. And that gets in the way of inclusiveness. We have to be mindful of that: be aware of that first impression."
