Addiction in the workplace: broader than you think | Anders Denken Podcast with addiction specialist Robert van de Graaf

Robert van de Graaf Anders Denken Podcast

In episode #31 of the Anders Denken Podcast, we speak with Robert van de Graaf: physician, former addiction specialist and behavior change specialist. The conversation revolves around a tantalizing thought: we are addicted not only to substances such as alcohol or nicotine, but also to comfort, convenience and even absenteeism.

From classic addiction to daily consumption behavior

According to Robert, we too often look at addiction as an individual medical problem. While many workplace behaviors - sitting for long periods of time, constantly looking at your phone, eating unhealthily - have the same patterns as alcohol or drug use. "We have taught ourselves to relieve discomfort immediately. That can be with a drink, but it can also be with scrolling or calling in sick," he explains.

The power of the group

Individual counseling can help, but behavior change is much more effective when the group moves with it. Robert compares it to the healthcare industry: where virtually every doctor used to smoke, that is now unthinkable thanks to a culture shift. "Change the norm and behavior follows."

Sober in the workplace

Robert advocates a broad policy on safe and healthy consumption. Not just for alcohol or drugs, but for anything that affects our functioning: from sleep deprivation to excessive phone use. Being sober, he says, means "having your head on straight, being alert and attuned to your colleagues."
