Continuing education

Continuing education: for young and old

Permanente educatie voor jong en oud

It is a cliché to say that change is the only constant, but in many cases a cliché to the truth. Not only is the world changing rapidly, so is the organization and the people within it. To keep up with these changes, continuing education is an important part of keeping your employees sustainably employable. Now and for the future.

Why is employee development important?

Through continuous education and training, an employee is prepared for the changes he or she faces. These changes can be obvious, but often unexpected. Therefore, it is not only important to continue learning to deepen in the current position, but also to delve into personal interests. After all: an employee doing what he or she enjoys gives more work happiness and engagement in the job.

Why is it important that employees continue to learn and develop?

Some changes have a long lead time, such as digitization and automation. These are processes that have not been widely implemented overnight, and implementation of these can take some time. Still, it can come as a surprise when the organization starts digitizing or automating and employees are not prepared for this. Timely start with training that is functionally related to this can prevent downtime.

It may also be that the change comes unexpectedly, such as after an accident, absenteeism or (partial) disability. If an employee is flexible and can deal with these major changes, there is a greater chance of returning (partially) to the workplace than if an employee is not prepared for this.

What are PE points?

There are also professions that require PE points, or continuing education credits. This is because in some fields it is important that the (professional) knowledge of professionals remains up-to-date, the professional remains competent and may continue to practice the profession. The courses and trainings taken must also be provided by a PE-recognized institution.

PE credits often apply to employees in real estate or within the financial sector, such as: lawyers, notaries, (IT) auditors, real estate agents and tax advisors.

How do you encourage development?

The role of the organization in keeping employees flexible is great. An employee must feel room within the company to bring up the fact that he or she wants to follow a study, training or course and that he or she is supported in this. Subsequently, it is also up to the employee to take responsibility himself or herself to continue to develop. In this way, the organization and the employee remain sustainably employable.
