Different Thinking Podcast S2E07 with Tessa Duste

Tessa Duste on the greening of buildings and interiors | Anders Denken Podcast S02E07

In our latest Different Thinking Podcast, Tessa Duste, one of the Founders of MOSS, which stands for Makers of Sustainable Spaces, who specialize in complete green projects ranging from tropical indoor gardens, intensive green roofs to urban agriculture projects. MOSS' mission is to bring nature and greenery back into the inhabited world. In this podcast, Cis and Tessa elaborate on exactly what MOSS does and the changes in ideas about green architecture it has experienced over the past 10 years.

Tessa's background is in industrial design, where as a designer you are often concerned with trends and developments. Greening where people, animals and nature are in balance is something that makes Tessa very happy. She also notices an increasing need for more greenery:

"When we started 10 years ago we really had to explain why we were doing this, but by now it's already very different. I think that period of the COVID pandemic also helped with that, where people of course had to be inside all the time, and noticed what missing interaction with people and nature does to a person. This made people understand much better why we are involved in this."

Duste also talks about the difference in "ordinary" and green architecture. "There is an incredibly big difference in ordinary architecture and green architecture. Ordinary architecture is a degenerative process: You've delivered a building and it looks peaky, but after 10 years you see the decay slowly coming in, and after 20 years you may already be thinking 'there may be something new.'"

She continues: "With green architecture, where nature is part of it, we sometimes have to indicate at the time of delivery that 't may take another season or two before the discussed result can really be seen. But the big difference is that after 10, 20 years it only gets more beautiful. That's a completely different way of thinking, how we look at design processes, sustainability and therefore the architecture of buildings."
