Anders Denken Podcast S2E013 with Kim Jansen
Kim Jansen on generational diversity at work. | Anders Denken Podcast #12
What are the differences between generations in the workplace? And how do you leverage that generational diversity? In our latest Anders Denken Podcast, generation expert Kim Jansen provides answers. She helps organizations build bridges and leverage generational differences. With the goal, an inclusive and future-proof organization, where young and old reinforce each other and everyone's talent is utilized.
According to Jansen, there are five generations active in the workplace: the Baby Boomers (1940 - 1955), Generation X (1955 - 1970), the Pragmatists (1970 - 1985), Generation Y, also known as Millennials (1985 - 2000) and Generation Z (2000 - 2015). 'The Baby Boomers think mainly in a job for life. Generation X thinks in expertise: you pick a profession and become good at it. The Pragmatists think in steps, growing and making money. Generation Y has a fluid view of work and mainly wants a job that is fun and meaningful. And Generation Z is future-oriented and wants (financial) security, but also flexibility.'
Unfortunately, the gap between the Pragmatists (our current managers) and Generation Z is incredibly wide, says Jansen. 'The Pragmatists have been raised very rational, pragmatic and according to a fixed mindset: just go do it. This has made them very self-reliant. The younger generation was raised emotionally and fluid, which brings uncertainty. That difference leads to misunderstanding in the workplace. 'The Pragmatists think, "don't be so difficult, just go to work," while Generation Z doesn't want to "have to" do anything and instead demands more kindness.'
