In our latest Different Thinking Podcast, Dr. Marcia Goddard provides answers. She has a rare talent for translating neuroscience, or "brain knowledge," to the workplace in a down-to-earth and practical way.
'Before, a mental health problem, such as an anxiety disorder or depression, for example, was seen as something clinical, something you had to solve. Now people identify with such a label: this is who I am and I want that to be taken into account. That's a positive development, but it also presents employers with new challenges.
The solution to keep the entire team, including employees with mental issues, functioning optimally? Goddard has one, but it is very time intensive. 'Sit down with each employee individually and ask them what they need from you to be effective. And yes, you'll get a different answer from everyone. And yes, that's tricky. But we live in a time when we can no longer escape it. The new work generation thinks it's normal to talk about mental issues, so they're going to do the same in your workplace.'
